As a leading recruitment company, we’ve encountered it all and possess insider knowledge on those challenging interview questions that often baffle candidates.

So, grab a cup of tea and let’s delve into the most common interview questions!

1. Tell Us About Yourself

This is a common ice-breaker question that many of you have probably heard before. Don’t worry, they’re not asking for your life story. A summary of your work experience and planned professional journey will do! Feel free to add in a couple of personal interests to show off your personality. This is a great opportunity to showcase your strengths!

2. What’s your greatest weakness?

A tough one! It can be easy to try to spin a positive into a negative- “I’m a perfectionist”, “I work too much”- they’ve been heard before. Try to be genuine about your weaknesses, but make sure to explain how you’re actively trying to improve this. Authenticity is key!

3. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Don’t worry, you don’t need to bring your crystal ball to the interview! This is a common question asked by interviewers to evaluate whether your goals align with the company. Rather than penning yourself into a specific timeline, talk about what skills you want to gain in the next few years to help you develop your career. Show enthusiasm for growth within the organisation without sending them on a fantasy journey.

4. Why do you want to work here?

‘Because I need a job’ just won’t cut it unfortunately. Instead, connect your aspirations to the company’s values, culture, and achievements. Let them know why you believe you’re a perfect fit and how you can contribute to the team’s success.

5. How do you handle stress?

It’s no secret that everyone experiences stress at work. The interviewer will want to understand how you handle various stressful situations at work and if you can remain productive. Remember to showcase your skills whilst using real-life examples to illustrate your capabilities.

6. Describe a challenging situation at work and how you handled it

This might seem a daunting question, but it is a common one used by interviewers to better understand your mindset. A challenging situation might be difficulties with a customer complaint, being assigned a task you haven’t handled before or struggling with workloads. Remember to be specific in your response and always relay how you handled it and what you learned from it.

7. Why did you leave your previous job?

It might seem easy to bad-mouth your previous workplace, but it is a huge turn-off to prospective employers. Remain respectful in your answer and highlight your desire for growth and progression instead! How has your previous experience with these companies prepared you for the future?

8. Do you have any questions for us?

This is a perfect opportunity to show interest in this company! Prepare thoughtful questions about the company’s goals, team dynamics, or specific role. A little research beforehand will allow you to perfectly adapt your questions to this company, showing initiative and eagerness.

Remember that interviews are like unique puzzles. They can take different shapes and forms depending on the sector you’re venturing into. The questions might shift, but your ability to navigate them with professionalism and confidence remains the key to success.
