From researching the company to your body language- make sure you ace your interview using our top 5 tips straight from a recruiter!
This might seem like an obvious tip, but hear me out! Giving yourself a few hours to look over the job description and aligning your qualities to their requirements before an interview can be a game-changer. You can tailor your responses to what they are looking for and draw upon your personal experience to fit this.
Familiarise yourself with the company and their values before the interview. Social media and company websites are a great call for this, as they often outline its history. Your recruitment consultant can also provide some background too, so don’t be shy. Ask them as many questions as you want!
Body language is a big factor in an interview. The interviewer will not just be studying your experience, but how you come across as a person. Your body language should tell the client that you are a focused individual that is interested in this position and their company. Avoid looking bored or fed up and maintain a healthy amount of eye contact. You want to show that you’re actively listening and interested in learning more.
At the end of the day, you’re there to sell yourself! Present and hold yourself with pride.
When an interview opens the floor for your questions, don’t waste it! It’s a great opportunity to get a feel for the job and the company, answering any questions that the job description didn’t. Prepare 4 or 5 questions as a few might be answered already within the interview. You can always bring a notebook with them jotted down- this allows you to make notes on their answers too.
Here are a few examples of the questions you could ask:
An interviewer will want to know about your past responsibilities in your previous jobs. So before you go think about your highlights. What are you most proud of in your career? What are some accomplishments that fit this current job post?
When they ask questions about characteristics or qualities you will be prepared to have examples of your work. They might say something like:
“Tell us about a time a project went wrong and explain how you dealt with it and what you learned”
When they ask something that requires you to think quickly, remember to remain calm and take a few seconds to think it over. If you don’t have an example think of something related- you can always say ‘well I don’t have an example of that, but when X happened I used my skills in Y to resolve the issue.’
What to Include in a Succesful CV
An interview is a conversation. It can be nerve-wracking, especially if you want/need the position. Remain calm and be confident in yourself. The purpose of your preparation is to make the interview as smooth as possible. Use it to your advantage!
This is the last stage, so sell yourself and your abilities truthfully.
