Women in Recruitment

21st March 2023, Tara McManus

March is International Women’s Month! This month we recognise the achievements and efforts of women.

In this blog, we will explore the role of women in recruitment and the challenges they face.

In the UK, women have been pivotal in driving the growth and development of the recruitment industry, contributing significantly to its success and resilience.

The sector stands as a cornerstone of the UK economy, annually providing approximately £42 billion. In 2021 alone, it facilitated over 22.4 million temporary or contract placements and 540,000 permanent placements.

The Role of Women in Recruitment

Traditionally perceived as a ‘Boy’s Club’, the recruitment industry has undergone a transformative shift with the increasing presence of women. While challenges persist, progress is evident, with nearly half of all recruitment consultants in the UK being women, according to a report by Women in Recruitment. However, a considerable gender disparity remains in senior leadership positions, with a third of recruitment firms having less than 5% female representation at board level.

Women have continued to create innovative solutions within the recruitment industry, like Charlotte Pearce, the founder of Inkpact. Charlotte revolutionised recruitment by combining handwritten notes with technology to create a more personal connection between recruiters and candidates.

Job Advice From a Recruiter

Advocates for Diversity and Inclusion

Women have been champions for diversity and inclusion within the recruitment industry, recognising the value of varied perspectives and experiences. Their advocacy extends beyond gender, including ethnicity, age, disability, and other aspects of diversity. Initiatives promoting inclusivity have been key in fostering a more welcoming and fair workplace culture.

They’re also been instrumental in pioneering new technologies and processes to streamline the recruitment process and make it more efficient and effective. Employees who work under a female manager are 6 times more engaged in the workplace compared to those under a male manager.

Not only are women well-represented in the candidate pool, but they bring valuable skills and experiences to the table. They have made strides in traditionally male-dominated sectors, such as technology and engineering, and have brought fresh perspectives.

Striving for Work-Life Balance

Achieving work-life balance remains a persistent challenge for women in recruitment, particularly those juggling professional responsibilities with caregiving duties. Flexible working arrangements, such as remote work options and parental leave policies, are essential in enabling women to advance in their careers without sacrificing personal obligations.

Helen Reynolds, the Managing Director of Amberjack, has championed flexible working policies within her firm, promoting a culture of trust and autonomy. Her efforts have led to increased employee satisfaction and productivity.

Looking Ahead

As the recruitment landscape continues to evolve so do opportunities for women. Technological advancements, shifting job markets, and changing workplace dynamics present new avenues for growth and innovation. Mentorship programs and networks play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of female leaders, ensuring their continued success in the industry.

A Call to Action

While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. Recruitment firms must commit to gender equality and diversity by implementing inclusive hiring practices, conducting gender pay audits, and investing in leadership development programs for women. By fostering an environment of equal opportunity and inclusion, the industry can unlock the full potential of its female talent pool and drive sustainable growth and success.
