“Superhighway” Approved by Ofgem

13th August 2024, Tara McManus

On 13th August, Ofgem confirmed that the Electrical “Superhighway” Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) has been approved.

This project will help move energy around the grid on days when the wind doesn’t blow or demand is high.

The proposed Anglo-Scottish electricity superhighway, known as Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), has achieved a significant milestone by clearing its final fast-track funding hurdle, as announced by Ofgem. This ambitious project is a key component in the UK’s strategy to strengthen its renewable energy abilities and meet its future energy needs.

Building a Vital Link

Eastern Green Link 2 is a £3.4 billion infrastructure project that aims to construct a 500km subsea and underground electricity cable, connecting Scotland and Yorkshire. The cable is designed to carry large amounts of electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind and solar power, helping to distribute this energy across the country. The route, which spans under the sea and underground, has been carefully planned to minimise environmental impact while maximising the efficiency and reliability of electricity transmission.

Eastern Green Link 2’s Role in the UK’s Renewable Energy Goals

EGL2 is set to play a crucial role in the UK’s broader efforts to transition to a cleaner, greener energy system. The project is expected to have the capacity to power approximately 2 million homes, significantly contributing to the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. As the UK moves towards its 2050 net-zero carbon emissions target, projects like EGL2 are essential for ensuring the necessary infrastructure to support the increased generation and distribution of renewable energy.

Ofgem’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment Framework

The EGL2 project has been fast-tracked under Ofgem’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework. This framework is part of the UK’s strategy to enhance its energy grid and support its clean energy goals. EGL2 is the first of 26 projects to receive approval under this framework, underscoring its importance in the national energy strategy.
